Check the latest Visa Bulletin to confirm the applicant's priority date is current. Evaluate whether to use the Final Action Date or Dates for Filing chart. Determine if concurrent filing is available.

Prepare I-485 main form, I-944 (if applicable), I-864 Affidavit of Support (family-based) or employer letter (employment-based). Concurrently prepare I-765 (EAD) and I-131 (AP). Coordinate I-693 medical exam timing — valid for 2 years from civil surgeon signature; recommended within 60 days before filing or submitted later as RFE response.

Preparation 2-4 weeks

Family-based sponsors must complete I-864 Affidavit of Support, committing to financially support the applicant until naturalization or 40 qualifying work quarters. Prepare 3 years of federal tax returns, employment letter, asset proof. Employment-based sponsors provide employment verification letter.

Family-based (marriage) petitioner must attend the interview and answer questions about relationship bona fides. Employment-based employer may need to provide updated employment confirmation letter.

Complete medical exam at a USCIS-designated Civil Surgeon, including vaccination review. The I-693 report is valid for 2 years from the civil surgeon's signature. Recommended within 60 days before I-485 filing, or defer until RFE. Bring vaccination records.

Exam costs ~$200-$500, excluding vaccine catch-up costs. Find a nearby Civil Surgeon on the USCIS website.

Upon receiving ASC appointment notice, attend the designated location on time for fingerprinting, photo, and signature. Bring the appointment notice and valid ID.

Notice received 3-8 weeks after filing

Upon receiving Biometrics Appointment Notice (I-797C), guide client to ASC for fingerprinting. Track EAD and AP approval progress. EAD typically approved 3-6 months after I-485 filing.

Biometrics typically 3-8 weeks after filing

Upon receiving interview notice, conduct interview preparation and mock Q&A. Pay special attention to bona fide relationship questions for marriage-based cases. Accompany client to USCIS Field Office interview with all originals.

Interview typically 8-18 months after filing

Some employment-based I-485 cases may receive interview waivers, especially EB-1/EB-2/EB-3 categories.

The I-864 is a legally binding contract. The support obligation continues until the beneficiary naturalizes, permanently departs the US, dies, or works 40 qualifying quarters. Divorce does not terminate the obligation.

Important: The I-864 financial obligation remains enforceable even after divorce.

Once EAD (I-765) is approved, you may work legally. Once Advance Parole (I-131) is approved, you may travel internationally while I-485 is pending. A Combo Card (combined EAD + AP) is now typically issued.

Important: Departing the US before EAD/AP approval may result in I-485 being deemed abandoned.

Attend interview with all original documents. Marriage-based cases require attending with spouse to answer bona fide marriage questions. Employment-based cases may have interview waived. Officer may approve on the spot or request additional evidence.

After interview approval, track case status. Confirm correct mailing address for green card (I-551). If conditional green card (marriage less than 2 years), remind client to file I-751 within 90 days before expiration.
